What is a storyboard?

Goal: You will learn about the process of storyboarding in preparation for using a storyboard in your next project.

Planning is one of the most crucial steps to any process. The storyboard is a basic tool that allows the user to create a visual aid to assist all parties involved in producing a video to visualize the plans of the director/producer/editor. Please read the article “ Telling a Storyboard” (http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/).

Write a one-page journal entry reflecting on how a storyboard will be helpful in your upcoming project. Also reflect on what circumstances may not be appropriate for a storyboard. This journal is due Thursday, 9/18.

A story board is graphic organizers where you will display images and words describing each scene.

Story boards are helpful because it gives you a clear image and idea of what your video will look like when recording it. A story board will help you plan and organize each scene in your story. Such as what the scene will show, the affects you will add in and how long each scene will be. A story board allows you to plot the scenes that you will be recording.

Storyboards are very helpful in the video-making process. The first part of making a video is getting an idea. After that you need to plan out your idea and that is where the storyboard comes into play. What a storyboard is is a written out plan of your whole clip or your whole movie. You can draw a picture of every movement you do in your film, or just draw out the general points of your video. With every image you draw you write a little explanation of what you’re going to do in that clip.
Storyboards make sure that you have everything planned out before you start filming. For example it would be very hard to have a camera in hand and be planning out your movie on the spot. That is why even famous filmmakers such as Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg use storyboards. Even though theirs are a little more advanced than the ones we are using in our class, they still function and get us ready for making the video in the same exact way. If you visualize your video beforehand you will get a great sense of how your idea will work before filming it and putting it on a tape.
Using storyboards helps prevent big mistakes while you film which down the road saves a lot of money. As stated on http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/, the reason for storyboarding is to “save yourself more trouble.” All the creativity of your film takes place in the storyboarding part so, that when you start filming it’s very easy to know what you’re going to do and it’s much easier to instruct people on what to do. Storyboarding also saves a lot of time.
As said on http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/, “Rather than spending time with your fully charged and powered up camera in your hand trying to decide what and how to shoot your video, you sit in a room by yourself and go over the script in detail.” While storyboarding, you can make changes with just a swipe of an eraser instead of the long, annoying process of re-shooting.
Storyboarding isn’t only drawing pictures, but it could be models or dolls, whatever you feel can plan your video out right, you can use.
Some circumstances that would not be appropriate for a storyboard would be showing exactly how something will happen. Storyboards are just general ideas that plan your video, but you can’t plan the exact time it will take for the actress to say something, or if the car will drive safely. There are always accidents so circumstances like planning that an actor won’t get sick or planning that a car won’t crash is not appropriate.
You don’t have to be an artist to make a storyboard. Even a few stick figures and basic shapes could do the job just as long as you know what they all stand for and what they all mean. In general, storyboards are very helpful.

The storyboard will be very helpful in our next project. It will help because a storyboard is most often used as a tool for getting an idea of what and how an idea will work in your movie before actually putting on a tape. This project uses a storyboard because we have to plan what are two and a half-minute video is going to be about. Then from there we can do it frame by frame. A storyboard is drawing an image that you want to make into a sense later. If you make a storyboard, it will make it so you do not waste time when you are filming. If you do not make a storyboard before you, start filming then you will waste battery and tape because you will be walking around trying to figure out what shot you want. If you did a storyboard before you started filming then all you would have to do is look at the storyboard and you knew what you where filming and what the frame would be. For the movie that we are, doing in class the storyboard is the best way to get your idea on paper so that way you do not waste the battery and tape of the camera that we are borrowing. There is really nothing that should not be on a storyboard you should. You should try to fit everything on the storyboard. The more you fit on the less confusion you have while you are filming.

Storyboarding

Storyboarding will be very helpful in our upcoming project because it will save a lot of time. It will save time because it helps you set up each frame and know exactly what you need to film. It will save you time because you won’t have to film everything that you “might” need you just have to film what you really need. It would also cut down on editing time, because you would have less to edit. As the article, “Telling a Storyboard,” (http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/) mentions almost everything can use a storyboard. For example a wedding, although you don’t know exactly what will happen you know the basic outline of a traditional wedding. So you can make a storyboard including a shot of the church, the clergy member, the bride and the groom, together or separately, and show shots from the reception too. An example of a production that would not use a storyboard would be any type of live sporting event or breaking news story would be very difficult if not impossible to storyboard. It would be very hard to storyboard because the outcome could be one of many things. If it were a sporting event, of course you know a few of the plays or possible outcomes but anything could happen. A player could get injured, a fight could break out and you would not know the most important outcome of the game the score. Win, tie, lose it could be either. Another example, a breaking news story could change at any second. No one can predict what will happen. Whether it be a natural disaster or a burglary, crime, or murder. No one will no what will happen next. If the criminal was caught, the damage or the death toll that the natural disaster caused. Not a single person can predict what would happen in that situation. Story boarding is very helpful and it saves time, effort, and money.

A storyboard will be helpful in our upcoming project for many reasons. One reason is that the storyboard helps plan out what we will be doing. This is helpful because when you go to record you know exactly what you need to film. If you didn't have a storyboard there is a chance that you will film the wrong stuff, or film too much, or not enough. Storyboards will also be helpful in the upcoming project because you can estimate the time of each clip, and once you have the time for each clip you will be able to have a rough time of the whole project. Therefore if you are over the limit you can make cuts before you go to film, and if you are under the limit you can add to the film. Another reason why storyboards are helpful is that you can see when you will need somebody to help you film and when you can just put the camera on a tripod. A storyboard is really useful for this upcoming project.

A circumstance that would not be appropriate for a storyboard is when you are filming something that is unpredictable. For example, if you are filming a soccer game you can't really direct a soccer game. You could put that a soccer player kicks the ball in one box and then the next is the ball going into the goal. But, there is a chance that while filming this the player doesn't get the goal. You could also have down that "player a" passes the ball to "player b" but while filming that maybe "player b" misses the ball. You could film it until you get it right, but there is a possibility that it may never go right. Storyboards are not the best for unpredictable things, like soccer.

Over all, storyboards are great for planning videos in advance. But occasionally they may not be so helpful.

A storyboard is used by filmmakers to organize their ideas before filming and helps them manage how they want their story to be played out with a camera. Storyboards show how a film’s scenes may or may not fit together once editing begins. A storyboard would be helpful in the upcoming project because with it, I can choose what ideas of mine will and will not work on film and what possible order my scenes may go. With a storyboard, filming becomes more organized because you have a blueprint to follow during the shooting. Having a storyboard saves time; instead of trying to figure out what to film next or what event would happen next, a storyboard is like filming without the camera, instead of using a camera. You draw out every scene, and by drawing each scene, you will have a better idea of what goes together and what doesn't. By drawing everything out beforehand, you can see what scenes will look good together and which are out of place, so you will know when you start shooting. When its time to shoot, you can follow the storyboard so you don’t forget anything or film what you don’t need. Stick figures can illustrate what the shot should look like and take more than half the time to draw out. A circumstance that is not appropriate for storyboards is when you are filming a live event like a sports game because you can’t predict what will happen and you cant direct the players. This clip from youtube shows how top movie executives plan storyboards and how people are hired for the sole purpose of creating storyboards. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3mAHQuBqQI) Storyboards are very helpful to movie makers.

A period

Storyboards

Storyboards are very helpful before you start filming anything. They keep you organized and on track of what you are trying to film. Having a good idea and keeping everything organized will help in the end in having a clearer more on task video. This might take more time but it might save you a lot of time in the end. This doesn’t mean that you have to follow your storyboard completely but it gives you an idea of what you want to happen. Storyboards are very helpful but not when you are filming games or things you don’t know the outcome of.

All in all i think storyboards are a great way in keeping all your thoughts together and makeing a better video.

A storyboard is a tool used to display and explain what your video will be about. A storyboard is similar to a comic strip. It contains sketched images of the scene, along with a short description of the picture and what’s going on in it. The website http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/ says, “Perhaps more importantly, they illustrate how these scenes might (or might not) fit together once you begin editing.” Although storyboarding is not the only method used today, it is a very common one, used by many famous directors including Hitchcock and Spielberg. You can storyboard whatever way you want to. You do not have to include every little detail of your production either, it can just include the basics. Although if you like to include lots of detail, that is fine too. There are many different ways to storyboard. There are also several programs that allow you to storyboard on your computer instead of on plain paper.

Believe it or not storyboarding actually saves you time in the long run. Storyboarding lets you, as said on http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/, “Visualize your ideas before you shoot.” The website also said, “Storyboarding is done before your video ever shows up on tape. Rather than spending time with your fully charged and powered up camera in your hand trying to decide what and how to shoot your video, you sit in a room by yourself and go over the script in detail. In essence, you pretend you're shooting the video and you draw each shot as you go. You can then review these drawings in sequence to make sure everything will go together the way you think it will. If it doesn't, its best to know this beforehand. That way, you can make changes before you shoot, sometimes eliminating the need for re-shooting.” Overall, storyboarding is a very smart desion to make and will save you time and money. – Michele B.

Storyboards

A storyboard will be very helpful in our next project because we will be able to see our plans and we will be able to revise anything that we may want to change or move do a different scene. “A storyboard is the most often used tool for getting a sense of how an idea will work before putting it down on tape”. http://www.videomaker.com/article/2313/. It consists of images of your movie like a comic strip.

The circumstances of not creating a storyboard is you will not be able to figure out all the dialogue in such a short notice. Another bad thing that might happen you will know all of your planning and you would start from scratch when you film.

Storyboards are helpful for many reasons. In this project a storyboard is helpful because there are no specific guidelines, so working out ideas is important so everything runs smoothly. Because there is a time limit the storyboard gives a good estimate about how long the final project will be. Storyboarding helps with editing, and keeps many extra shots from being filmed, especially while people are new to filming.

Also putting things down on paper is important. If it is not a great idea, sometimes it is easier to see once it is out of your head. If it is a good idea, you can not forget it after it is down. You can add details about the angle of the camera, and any other details you have. You can also be sure that everything is doable. If you can not get what you want on paper you probably can’t explain to other people what you want them to do.

You could not really storyboard something like the Olympics because there no one is guaranteed to win, and anything could happen, like Phelps’s medals.

You could not really storyboard a poker tournament, except to write down the angles to film at, it is kind of an on the spot thing, that you can not really plan what is going to happen.
